Introduction:

In 1970, I had the good fortune of being able to take a series of classes in calligraphy with Thomas Ingmire, a master of the craft who was to become the first American elected to England's prestigious Society of Scribes and Illuminators, and whose work is known and celebrated worldwide.

Thomas, who still lives, creates, and instructs in San Francisco, was and is an excellent and exacting teacher, and all of his students receive a thorough grounding in the principles and techniques of this satisfying but often frustrating art form.

Although I’ve gone professional at times, I was not destined to become one of those Ingmire pupils who went on to create Great Serious Works of Calligraphy. I can say, however, that I’ve probably had more fun with it than many of them.

At about the same time, someone gave me a very large set of colored pencils, and, wanting to put them to use, I became annoyed at what I thought of as ridiculous prices for the artsy-psychedelic coloring books that were beginning to come onto the market.

I had, however, always been a sketcher and doodler, and it occurred to me suddenly one day that I could draw pictures and then color them. I’ve been doing it ever since.
In time, I began combining calligraphy with drawings both colored and black-and-white, and later with a little collage here and there.

Just for the fun of it, here are some examples:
